Practical Research 2, Course Syllabus
The course aims to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills of Grade 12 students through the conduct quantitative research relative to their interests and senior high school track and strand.
On the completion of this course, the student is expected to:
|
NOTE:
As a student enrolled in the Practical Research 2 course, you are required to download and keep a printed copy of the course syllabus. This is to ensure that you understand the whole purpose of the course and what competencies you are expected to have developed by the end of it. |
1 Introduction to Research
In this fraction of the course on Practical Research 2, SHS students are expected to attain the following competencies:
|
|
2 The Nature of Inquiry and Research
|
After this discussion, you are expected to have the ability to…
"Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information in order to increase our understanding of a phenomenon about which we are interested or concerned" |
|
3 Quantitative Research Designs
This lesson is a continuation of the discussion of the first two sub parts included in the chapter on The Nature of Inquiry and Research. It presents the three quantitative research designs for which the course on Practical Research 2 will be limited to: (a) Descriptive Research (Cross-sectional survey design); (b) Correlational Research (Explanatory Research); and (c) Experimental Research (True experiments and quasi-experiments).
The main objective of the lesson is for students to explore the various research designs and form questions that fall under each design relevant to their area of interest and SHS track.

|
Research Activity No. 1: QUEST for QUESTION
The Task:
Work cooperatively in the research team to determine a topic of interest for the group’s quantitative research. Then, frame at least three research questions, one for every quantity research design (descriptive, correlational, experimental). All research questions must reflect the topic of interest and relevant to the team’s senior high school strand. The Product: Present the result of the brainstorming activity to the rest of the class through a slideshow-aided, five-minute presentation on September 25th, Monday. The presentation must be reflective the following questions:

4 The Problem and Its Background
After this discussion, you are expected to have the ability to…
Below is the updated version that includes the SIgnificance of the Study and Scope and Delimitation.

5 Learning from Others: Review of Related Literature
After this discussion, you are expected to have the ability to…
|
|
Individual Activity 1
STITCHING STORIES
Download the document.
It includes literature taken from various sources that are all related to the research, “The Effect of Classical Music on Grade 11 Students’ Math Text Anxiety.” Compose a short but cohesive Review of Related Literature using all five of these, follow correct in-text citation, and state the references in APA style, 6th Edition using MS Word referencing feature. Output must be submitted on October 11, printed on an A4-sized paper. NOTE: Copy/paste the scoring table at the end of your output, right after the references. Also, some of the references are fictitious and will be used only for the purpose of this activity.

6 Framing the Framework, Hoisting the Hypotheses
The file in this website entry have been designed to facilitate the continued discussion of the second chapter of the research paper. It shall help students undertaking the subject to construct the remaining three parts of the chapter: the conceptual framework, the research hypothesis(es), and the definition of terms.

7 The Research Methodology (Part 1)
After this discussion, you are expected to have the ability to…

8 The Research Methodology (Part 2)
After this discussion, you are expected to have the ability to…

Individual Activity 2
QUESTIONING THE QUESTIONS
Download the document for your second individual activity. Study the questions you will find in the second page. There are seven poorly constructed items from a supposed set of questionnaires. Identify the type of error (may be one of those discussed in class but not on this list) in each item then suggest a way to revise the question. Print the document in an A4-sized paper. Write or encode the answers on spaces provided after each item.
|
|
Research Paper Format
The downloadable file will give you the guidelines for writing the research paper. I will not be discussing this in class any more but do note that it is your responsibility to follow the prescribed format. Hence, the evaluation of all your succeeding paper submissions will include assessing how well you were able to stick to the format.

|
8 Gearing Up for Data Gathering
For your assignment on the Plan for Data Gathering, follow the format indicated in the file. Specify the date for every objective. Objectives are general aims that your team will want to accomplish relevant to gathering your data. The tasks are the specific activities that you will need to do to accomplish the objective. This means that you may have an objective that would need more than one task. Be specific who will have to do the task in your group. The target accomplishment are the documents that you will be able to obtain once you accomplish the objective.

9 Finding Answers Through Data Collection
In this lesson, we are guided by the following objectives:
|
|
10 Conclusions and Recommendations
In this unit, Practical Research 2 students shall be exposed to the process of framing the conclusions of the research from the findings generated from the data gathered, and formulate recommendations based on these conclusions.
